Heirloom Purple Carrots

Did you know wild carrots and the first cultivated carrots were purple, yellow, red and white? Orange carrots only arose after humans selectively bred them into existence from the year 1500.

We recently found these beautiful heirloom purple carrots at one of our favourite market stalls.

They have an amazing colour and pattern which is especially highlighted when cut into rounds where it looks like a star or a flower. Unlike some other coloured vegetables it retains its unique colour when cooked.

It tastes similar to a normal orange carrot, just a little less sweet. They are appearing at more and more speciality grocery stores these days.
